Bruxism and What You Need to Know

What is it? Bruxism is a medical term for the grinding of teeth or the clenching of jaws. Bruxism often happens when kids are asleep or under stress.
How common is it? Sleep bruxism is highly reported in pediatrics with estimates as high as 30-40% of children and adolescents being affected.
Causes of bruxisms in children: The condition can be associated with factors such as daytime stress. anxiety, caffeine intake, and sleep apnea.
Effects of Bruxism
- flattened, chipped, or fractured teeth
- jaw, neck, or face soreness
- worn tooth enamel
- headaches
- sleep disruptions
- increased tooth sensitivity and pain
What can you do?
- try to relax in the hour before bedtime to reduce stress levels
- maintain a regular soothing bedtime routine
- create a sleep environment that is cool, comfortable, dark, and quiet
- keep work-related items such as computers out of the bedroom
